A Professional Young Company for 13-19s in Hertfordshire

Supported by Hertfordshire County Council, HCYT is the Participation team's flagship project. Every year we showcase the talent of young people aged 13-19 from across the county, offering them the opportunity to perform or get involved backstage in a professionally produced production.

The young company are exposed to professional direction, set design, costume design, lighting and sound design, and stage management, mentored by our in-house professional team.

The Future of HCYT

Due to government cuts, HCYT is in danger of losing its funding. We are currently running a Christmas Campaign as part of The Big Give to make sure that this project continues to support Herfordshire-based young people benefiting from creative industries. Acting Company

The acting company is chosen on a production by production basis from a round of workshop auditions that take place across Hertfordshire. Members of the performance company will take part in rehearsals and perform in a professionally produced production on stage at Watford Palace Theatre.

HCYT provides:

  • Unique access for young people to a professional producing theatre experience.
  • Increased level of professionalism in their approach to school rehearsals and lessons.
  • Practical understanding of a wide range of games, excercises and rehearsal techniques.

Past company members have said they enjoyed "how seriously the Watford Palace team took the project. It gave us all a real idea of what working in the industry would be like as they all worked as hard as they would on any other show". Alumni have gone on to train and work in the industry, including at the Manchester School of Theatre and making their own work at the Soho theatre in London.

For our last production, HCYT put on an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, adapted for stage and directed by Resident Director for Participation James Williams. Take a look at our trailer to see what our young company got up to:

How do I get involved?

Watford Palace will be touring schools in the spring and summer terms of 2018 to host auditions. Please ask your school if they have previously hosted a HCYT audition- if they have not and would be interested, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us on participation@watfordpalacetheatre.co.uk or 01923 810307.

We will also host auditions at the theatre for those where school may not be an applicable route to audition. Please get in touch with us if you would be interested in attending.

Young Production Team

As well as our acting company, we also offer a unique opportunity for 13-19 year olds to gain hands-on experience in backstage disciplines of lighting, sound and stage management. Young Company Members take part in the full production week, supported by professional Watford Palace Theatre team.

How do I get involved?

Every year we take one person for sound design, one person for lighting design, and two stage managers to assist our professional backstage team. Please send your CV and a covering letter to participation@watfordpalacetheatre.co.uk from August 2018 and we will be in touch regarding an interview.
