What to do in Watford in January

Written by Steve Marmion

January often gets a bad press. The decorations are down, the nights are long, and the sofa is calling. But in Watford, the new year brings a quietly brilliant programme of culture, comedy, and creativity – the perfect antidote to the winter blues.

Grease is the word at the Pump House

Get the Brylcream on and get down to the Pump House for their finger clicking, high kicking, back flipping spectacular (not sure if they have backflips, it was just a better rhyme than “fried chicken”). January 23 to 31 – Grease the musical – Pump House Watford.

Packed New Season at the Palace

Kicking off 2025 with a season that proves theatre doesn’t hibernate. Expect sharp comedy, bold new writing, and touring productions that feel both intimate and urgent. January is also a brilliant time to try something new here – shows are more daring, and audiences more adventurous.

If you fancy playing your own Traitors-esque game you should book for Werewolf, those who like thrillers and plot twists should go for The Mesmerist (starring Rufus Hound and directed by me), and if you really want to get ahead tickets for next year’s panto – A Christmas Carol The Pantomime – are on sale and only £15 for any seat and any show – they won’t get cheaper than this!!! Comedy Nights

If laughter is your preferred form of therapy, keep an eye on comedy nights across town. From established names testing new material to emerging comics finding their voice, January comedy has a looseness and unpredictability you don’t always get later in the year. It’s the perfect month to take a chance on a smaller gig and discover someone new.

Live Music

Music lovers have the Colosseum to look to with their programme of tributes and legends kicking off at the end of the month.  For those who like their drumming up close and personal (like our Andrew) then there is The Horns pub with live music most Fridays and Saturdays plus an open mic night on a Wednesday – The Horns, Watford.

Movies and More…

Film fans can look beyond the multiplex. Independent screenings and special events pop up throughout the month, offering classic films, cult favourites, and themed nights.

And don’t overlook Watford’s Library, artists in the Harlequin, and community spaces. January is when exhibitions launch, workshops begin, and creative groups open their doors to new members. Whether it’s visual art, writing, dance, or simply a good talk and a cup of tea, this is when local culture feels most welcoming.

So yes, January is cold. But it’s also generous, inventive, and full of possibility. If you’re looking for a resolution that actually sticks, make it this: get out, support something local, and remind yourself how much is happening right here in Watford.

Culture doesn’t wait for spring – and neither should we!
