Watford Film Club: Rushmore
22 May 2026
Join us for a screening of Rushmore, Wes Anderson’s breakthrough film and a defining work of modern indie cinema. With its signature visual style, dry humour, and standout performances, it remains as fresh and influential today as ever.
Directed by Wes Anderson, Rushmore (1998) follows Max Fischer, an ambitious and eccentric teenager at the prestigious Rushmore Academy. Despite being one of the school’s most enthusiastic and involved students—founding countless clubs and staging elaborate plays—Max struggles academically and faces expulsion.
Things become more complicated when Max befriends Herman Blume (Bill Murray), a wealthy but disillusioned industrialist, and develops a crush on Miss Cross, a teacher at the school. As both Max and Herman pursue Miss Cross, their friendship turns into a rivalry, leading to a series of increasingly dramatic and humorous schemes.
At its core, Rushmore is a coming-of-age story about ambition, identity, unrequited love, and the messy process of growing up.
