Kilimanjaro & Me

Proud Watford exists to work towards a place without prejudice — for everyone. On International Men’s Day, Thursday 19th November 2026, we’re proud to present Kilimanjaro & Me: a bold, honest, and deeply human new solo performance by Alex Murray, at the intimate and perfectly-suited 1908 Cabaret at Watford Palace Theatre.

The piece takes its title from Alex’s attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in support of a charity he believed in. When both the charity and the tour company collapsed, the fallout landed squarely on his shoulders — or at least, that’s how it felt. The kind of feeling many of us know, but that men are often least equipped to share: it’s on you, it’s your failure, get on with it.

What followed for Alex was a severe mental health crisis, expressed as acute anxiety. What matters — and what makes this piece so important — is that he talked about it. He asked for help. He got it.

Kilimanjaro & Me is a 20-minute monologue in two voices: Alex as himself, and Alex as Mount Kilimanjaro — vast, oppressive, and seemingly immovable. But here’s the twist the script holds close: Kilimanjaro is itself unstable. Volcanic. Subject to eruption and seismic shift. Nothing is as fixed or as certain as it appears — not mountains, not masculinity, not the expectations we place on men.

This is theatre that asks something of its audience — and gives a great deal back.
